Out In India: A Family's Journey
is a documentary chronicling the experiences of an American gay couple with two small children who spend 9 months in India fighting AIDS.
The film stars PETER CARLEY, DAVID GERE, NANDITA PALCHOUDHARI, and includes a special appearance by RICHARD GERE.

This verite style documentary, shot on location in the U.S. and India, follows David Gere, Peter Carley, and their two adopted children as they leave their home and jobs in L.A. for 9 months in India.
David has spent his life as a scholar with a passion for the intersection of AIDS and the arts. In his own words: “I want to believe the arts can stop AIDS. Not just help a little, but stop the disease. Stop. Finished. Over!”
Peter fought for years on the front lines of AIDS protests in the U.S. Both lost partners to the disease, both remain committed to the "forgotten pandemic." When David gets an opportunity to spend time organizing Indian artists to fight their burgeoning AIDS problem, he and Peter jump at the chance to make a positive contribution to a global crisis.

India, the world's largest democracy, has millions of HIV+ people, 90% of whom do not know they are infected. Multi-partner, unprotected sex is rampant, yet frank discussions of sexuality and AIDS prevention are taboo.
In this traditional society struggling to modernize, can two gay dads from America make a difference?

While David travels around India gathering artists into what he hopes will become a political movement, Peter feels increasingly alone and vulnerable taking care of their children.
Breaking new ground in its unflinching portrayal of an activist gay family, Out in India examines the intersection of gay people and artists in fighting HIV and AIDS on a global scale.

Pushed to the breaking point in the crucible of India’s traditional, marriage-centric society, David and Peter’s journey culminates in a gathering of artists and activists in Calcutta, where a spontaneous street action offers the possibilities of the birth of an artist’s movement and new perspectives for the couple.
At a time when gay families are a hot button issue, and American influence is being challenged abroad, Out in India is an exploration of the costs and joys of global activism, set on the brilliantly colored stage of 21st century India.
